Modified Contact

Tens
The following section outlines how the xv a side game can be modified to provide a game that mixed abilities could play especially where playing numbers are limited.
The basic principles of each game are to:
- Slow down the pace of the game to incorporate lower levels of fitness
- Control the levels of contact to allow for different levels of ability
- Keep the magical excitement of the game
- Make it easier to referee
These games are played under the Laws of the Game of Rugby Football as framed by the International Rugby Board and adopted by the RFU, though each has its own slight differences.
These differences are mainly formed out of the need to change the game to suit the players. So if you don''t have enough front row forwards or have not got enough time to play a full match then specific changes are made to allow for these differences.
See the RFU's recommended game rules for these modifications here
Tens
Tens has been extremely popular because it allows groups to enter two (more for even larger groups) teams, thus giving all players maximum time on the playing field.
It provides more room players to be able to run free and move the ball into space. It is also slightly slower than 7 a side as the pitch is slightly more congested.
With 3 more players on the field more tactical play comes into practice with a focus on forward play at scrums and line outs.
The game is mostly used as a development tool within pre season training and when player numbers are short.
Clubs and Constituent Bodies could offer 10's festivals at the start of the season as a gentle introduction to the season.
